Stirring the pot: How a child and her family stir up internal conflicts in each other
Kimberly Kleinman, LCSW, Presenter
Ms. Kleinman will share process from the analysis of a latency-age child who was adopted from an Eastern European orphanage into a family with a highly masochistic style of relating. This child’s pattern of relating, formed by her fears and fantasies as well as by the reality of having been abandoned, was the focus of her treatment. The clinical material will serve as a springboard for the discussion of the development of masochism.
Kimberly Kleinman, LCSW, is the co-chair of the Child and Adolescent Psychoanalysis Program at the Psychoanalytic Training Institute of NYFS. She is on the faculty of the New York Institute for Psychotherapy Training in Infancy, Childhood and Adolescence (NYIPT), and the Family Forensic Institute. She has done research concerning joint attention in the parent-child relationship, and has lectured about developmental issues for the American Academy of Psychoanalysis, The Alumni Association of NYIPT and The Covenant House Training Institute.
